Aspex is a unique visual arts organisation and educational charity, based in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. Through our exhibition programme, Artist's Studio and learning programme, our mission is to support emerging artists and reveal the creative process. We connect people with artists, creating opportunities to experience contemporary visual art in a variety of ways; from looking and discussing, to making and curating.
Aspex has a changing programme of exhibitions, meaning every visit provides a new experience. Aspex has 40-year track record of supporting emerging artists - Artists such as Mona Hatoum, Richard Wilson and Susan Collis, all internationally acclaimed, received support from Aspex at an early point in their careers.
Aspex are able to provide your students with artist led practical workshops to explore the exhibitions and develop artistic skills and understanding. All of our workshops are bespoke and the Learning Programme Manager will devise the workshop in consultation with the lead teacher, to enhance curriculum learning.

Aspex provides workshops for all ages:
Early Years & Foundation
In our early years workshops we explore artists and artworks using hands-on creative activities. Exploring a range of materials, these sessions are designed to be fun and engaging to promote an interest in art & culture from a young age.
Throughout KS1/KS2 we develop upon our workshops by adding a level of critical thinking, encouraging discussion and self expression. A focus on one or two artists and/or media, enable pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding. Opportunities for both team working and individual activities are encouraged in each session.
KS3/KS4 and up
Throughout KS3/KS4 and beyond, we deepen our understanding of exhibitions, artists & artworks, through greater analysis and discussion activities. Workshops will often culminate in the creation of response artworks and/or reflection work. There is also the opportunity at this level to explore professional development, career pathways and the history of Aspex and how the gallery sits within a wider cultural context.
All workshops are led by artists who are experienced in working with children and young people. We also have artists who specialise in particular areas, such as SEN.
