Cherwell Theatre Company is a creative home for young theatre-makers in Banbury and the surrounding areas

Through active participation in theatre projects, we create opportunities to inspire, train, nurture and develop young performers, directors, stage managers, designers and technicians. We strive to serve our participants and our audiences by producing ambitious, innovative, affordable and accessible theatre for our community. Our work is for everyone though we are particularly interested in creating strong female roles and inspiring non gender stereotype characters. Our patron is Sir Trevor Nunn, former Director of the RSC and National Theatre.

Established in 2004 by Nasser Memarzia, we have since presented: fourteen family theatre productions; three festivals showcasing local young writers, directors, designers and performers; two 'Theatre in Education' productions playing to more than 100,000 schoolchildren in our district; and a number of street theatre and site-specific works such as ‘A Shakespeare Summer Soiree’ at Broughton Castle.

Our weekly youth theatre is the core of everything we do, and our alumni have gone on to train at prestigious drama schools including RADA, Mountview, The Central School of Speech & Drama, Italia Conti, The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts. Many choose to return to work with us, as professionals, post-training. Others have also gone on to successful roles in non-arts based jobs.

Cherwell Theatre Company is proud to welcome all young voices, regardless of background or experience. We hold no auditions, and as a registered charity with low overheads, are able to keep our fees low and offer bursary places to those that need them.

Our classes

Each week during term time we deliver classes for young theatre makers. Our classes are open to anyone with an interest in theatre.

Classes for our youth theatre (11 to 16 years) are held at Banbury Studio Theatre, Banbury College on Mondays during term time, from 5.15pm to 6.45pm.

Classes for our young company (16 to 24 years) are held at Banbury Studio Theatre, Banbury College on Monday’s during term time, from 6.45pm to 8.15pm.

Participants will work towards one showcase or performance project each term, and one large-scale community production each year.

In the summer we run a 'Play in a Week' production of a contemporary play to give participants the experience of working within the model of a professional theatre company.

Recent projects include: The Monstrum, The Wind in the Willows, The Boy Preference, Henry V and Treasure Island

The cost to take part is £60 per 11 week term. We are proud to offer bursary places to those that need them to take part in our activities- just drop us a line.

We also began a programme of after school clubs in Oxfordshire primary schools in 2018. We currently have four in operation.
