Who we are
Pop Up are a non-profit social enterprise delivering imaginative and far-reaching children’s literature programmes which have a transformative impact on reading and writing skills and teaching practice, often in deprived schools and communities. We also produce talent and professional development opportunities for aspiring, emerging and established writers and illustrators. We are a Peterborough-based team of ten working nationally and internationally.
What we do
- Curate dynamic literature festivals in primary, secondary and special schools as well as in public spaces and online
- Facilitate artist-led collaborative activities producing great literature with children and young people
- Invest in, nurture and support diverse aspiring and emerging literary talent to access children’s publishing
- Advocate for arts-based approaches to literacy at local and national government level
Pop Up Festival
Our main offer is Pop Up Festival: a national schools literature programme which connects thousands of children nationwide with quality children’s literature and its authors. Pop Up Festival ‘takes over’ literacy and English every summer term across whole schools from nursery up - replenishing libraries, engaging authors as writer-role models, and empowering teachers to teach more creatively. The festival itself runs over two weeks in June, with 100s of classes hosting author workshops alongside a growing number of family activities and public events, all promoted through a Pop Up Magazine and a national PR strategy.
Our impact
We know that positive encounters with exciting books and their authors can have a transformative impact on children’s attitudes and skills around independant reading and writing - providing escapism, igniting imaginations and deepening their understanding of the world. Alongside the children we work with, we upskill teachers to cultivate more imaginative approaches to teaching literacy, embedding creativity into whole schools and making our work sustainable. Change through our work is regularly evidenced, especially in pupils and teachers, and heads regularly tell us their schools are transformed into more creative learning communities.
