Stand Tall Theatre is an applied theatre company based in Portsmouth that creates new performance for all ages and provides workshops for children and adults focused on their wellbeing and exploring neurodiversity. Applied theatre, in our terms, encompasses theatre that tackles areas of social and cultural policy, often drawing upon community experiences as stimulus. At Stand Tall Theatre we focus on the area of mental health and put the mental wellbeing of others at the forefront of our projects, ultimately taking the form of performance, online digital content and workshop. Stand Tall Theatre look at stigmatisation and conversation around mental illness within our local areas of Hampshire and surrounding communities. WIth neurodiversity at the heart of what we do. Being lead by Carley Dawson MA and Stevie Williams MA, whos practise lead research focuses on arts as wellbeing and empathy through theatre.
Children's theatre is a large part of the work, these productions (theatre experiences) are toured into schools and allow mental health concerns to become a talking point, with added options of programmed workshops and Q&A's.
Lastly, Stand Tall provide commissioned work for companies and charities, including film production, actors, theatre performance and Confidence through Drama workshops in Hampshire and surrounding areas.
If you would like to book a meeting with company directors to discuss how we can support your institute or work with you to tackle the neurodiverse and wellbeing of people. Please contact us.
Delving deeper into some of the commissioned work of Stand Tall Theatre and a specific insight into the most recent works of 2018-19, we see that the unique aspect and work ethic of Stand Tall Theatre is its inclusion of different art forms to create projects that reach communities whom need it most; with outreach workers of PARCS in Portsmouth, Portsmouth University film students, Rachel Maddocks School and 5 actors of Stand Tall Theatre, we are in production of 4 films that will be taken into SEN secondary schools for 2019, providing our creative expertise and wellbeing experience to merge with the talents and qualities of the other partners. On another hand there is an academic rigour to our documentation that exists as a digital archive of material online, allowing Stand Tall Theatre’s work to reach a wider audience online and be kept as documentation for further funding. This online work can be seen primarily via YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrv4vTaAzXc1v2Zg13g8iNA and blogging: www.standtalltheatre.blogspot.com. The need to keep up with an ever-changing era and make work public online stood out to us over 2017 and 2018, which is where the previously mentioned project came about. Partnering with Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth, Carley and Stevie ran regular workshops for women aged 18-55 whom suffer from anxiety or depression to encourage the start of their own personal blog, promoting self-value, confidence and creative writing. Stand Tall’s blog was a platform for analysis and the Arts Council funded project was a great success with further partnerships with Aspex Gallery already having taken place. Carley and Stevie documented this project in video format which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPtct5hAcAY
